A beautiful spot that is great to visit in Yunnan when you study in China is the Large Cascading Waterfall (Dà dié shuǐ pùbù, 大叠水瀑布). This great waterfall is near the Stone Forest, but a little farther away. From Kunming, it is about 1–2 hours further than the Stone Forest. This travel time will probably shorten in the future since they are currently working on developing better roads out that way. They also seem to be working on the tourist center right now as well. I think that this little known attraction will soon become a much more popular tourist spot once these improvements are made. However, the waterfall is absolutely gorgeous, so if you are looking for a beautiful part of Yunnan to visit, you need not wait until everyone is going there. It is also fun to visit a place where there are not so many tourists at the moment. My family especially enjoys getting off the beaten path and seeing places where not many other foreigners visit. Even though the roads to the Large Cascading Waterfall are not quite as good as those to the Stone Forest, the countryside is breathtakingly beautiful, making the drive itself quite enjoyable. You will drive through many small towns, farming countryside, and rolling hills. We were driving through the hills of Yunnan at sunset which was quite spectacular. The soft pastel colors lit up the Chinese countryside, and there were so many wonderful scenic views that could have been turned into incredible paintings. This is a neat chance to see what life is like in China outside of a big city. We drove past many little shops, small farms, and a few herds of goats. The town where the tourist center itself is located is quite small too. The attendants at the tourist center were helpful and the people in the town seemed friendly. They seemed quite curious about foreigners and liked to talk to us. It would be a good opportunity to learn Mandarin from the local people in a natural setting. People seemed to be less busy here than in the big cities. Hiking up to the Large Cascading Waterfall is great exercise. This is an invigorating hike in a gorgeous location. The whole walk is beautiful. As you stroll, you will see more of the countryside and small farms. When you get to the base of the waterfall, you will be rewarded for your hiking efforts with one of the most spectacular views in Yunnan. The Large Cascading Waterfall definitely lives up to its name. It is one of the most awesome waterfalls we’ve seen anywhere in the world. After you learn Chinese in China in a big city like Kunming, the quiet and beauty of nature is quite refreshing. Near the Large Cascading Waterfall, it is very peaceful and serene. You can rest a while listening to the soothing sound of rushing water, forget the hustle and bustle and general business of the city, and just enjoy being in the Chinese countryside for a while. Then, even if you have to return to work or studies, you can do so very much refreshed. This essay is written by Anna Rugg, who is studying Chinese at Kunming Keats Chinese Language School. Anna would like to share her experience while studying and traveling in China.
